Activities That Involve Parents

Encourage your students and their parents to learn together with the following activities from the Family Bingo Program.  Include these activities in your newsletter, or send them home as a weekend project.

1.  Help develop your child's concept of numbers by counting out a hundred of any simple object. (i.e. sugar cubes, pretzels, toothpicks, etc.)  With your help, and a little glue, build something or create a design out of these items. (Kindergarten Activity)

2.  String a bead or macaroni noodle onto a piece of twine or ribbon each time you read a book with your child.  Turn this into a necklace and let him/her wear it during reading times.  (1st Grade Activity)

3.  On colored strips of paper, have each family member write down one nice thing about another family members.  Share what each person wrote and make a paper chain out of these strips.  Continue this activity for one week. (2nd Grade Activity)

4.  Play the card game "War" with your child.  Work on math skills by having each player flip over two cards and then multiply or add their values.  The person with the highest product or sum wins all four cards.  (3rd Grade Activity)

5.  Have your child read the "want ads" and pick out three careers that he/she feels would be interesting. (4th Grade Activity)

6.  Pick four different points on a map of the United States, and have your child figure out the distance between these locations and your hometown.  How long would it take to travel to these places by car. (5th Grade Activity)

7.  Design a family flag.  This can be used to symbolize the number of people in your family, your heritage, or your favorite activities.  Display your flag on special occasions. (6th Grade Activity)
